Like any relatively new product, LED lighting is surrounded by a mixture of fact and fiction. If you’re considering an investment in LED lighting for your business, it is important that you make your decision based on facts, not myths. So let’s break down some of the biggest myths about LED lighting and get to the truth.
LED Lasts Forever
This is probably a myth, but it’s hard to tell because the data just isn’t there yet. There are LED bulbs from the 60’s that are still working, while there are also recently (and poorly) made LEDs whose circuit boards give out long before they should.
LED Is Super Bright
This one is definitely false. Super bright is totally an option with LED lights, but it is not the only option. LED light intensity can range from a dim candlelight level all the way up to hospital-quality, super bright.
LED Doesn’t Look Nice
While this one may have been true at one time, it no longer is. LED was limited in size and shape of the bulb when it was first invented, but technology has come a long way. Now you can find LED bulbs in as many sizes and styles as traditional bulbs. Your commercial lighting design will not be limited if you choose LED bulbs, so don’t let that hold you back.
LED is Always Blue
Just as the bulb size used to be limited, the light color also used to only come in blue light, so this used to be true. Thankfully, those days are gone. LED bulbs now come in a variety of hues, including perfectly white, and there’s no “hint of blue” if you don’t want it.
LED Hurts Your Eyes
This myth is rooted in the connection between blue light and sleep issues. Blue light from electronic screens has been shown to interfere with melatonin, but LED lights emit far less blue light than any screen. You can use them in your business without worry.
LED Is Too Expensive
This is mostly myth, but it comes down to your perspective. It is true that LED lighting is more expensive up front than traditional lighting, but in the long run it will save you money. Part of what makes LED lighting such an environmentally friendly choice is that it requires much less energy to produce the same amount of light as traditional bulbs, saving you money on your energy bill. You also will save money in the long run because you won’t have to buy and replace bulbs as often.
