More than likely, you have probably been hearing a lot about LED lighting lately; about how energy efficient it is and how long-lasting the bulbs are. You’ve probably heard about how bright they shine and that the letters LED stand for Light Emitting Diode. Even with all that information, there are still plenty of interesting facts about LED lighting!
Inventors
You have Nick Holonyak, Jr. to thank for the invention of visible LED light. In 1962, he invented LED while working for General Electric, making LED not as new of a concept as you previously thought. Also, Shuji Nakamura became the inventor of blue LED light in 1994 when he was working for the Nichia Corporation. Nakamura received a nominal $200 bonus for his discovery. He eventually sued the corporation and was awarded $8.1 million in the Japanese court system.
Food Safety
Did you know that LED lighting is one of the healthiest options for use in restaurants and fast food shops? Studies have shown that LED lighting produces significantly less bacteria than other lighting options.
LED Colors
Variants of Gallium Phosphide and Gallium Arsenide Phosphide are responsible for giving most red, orange, and yellow LED lights their color. Blue and ultraviolet LED lights are coated with phosphor because of the way it emits photons.
Mass Production
Mass production of red LED lights began from the Monsanto Corporation, and mostly for use as replacement indicators lights and seven-segment displays.
Heat Production
In comparison to incandescent and halogen lights, LED A-bulbs are much cooler to the touch. While incandescent and halogen bulbs are known to reach temperatures that range from 375 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, residential LED A-type bulbs usually hover in the range of 135 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
Mercury
If you accidentally drop a compact fluorescent bulb on the floor, you’re not only picking up the glass, but you’ve now exposed yourself and your family to mercury contamination. LED bulbs contain absolutely no mercury at all and are made from 95% recyclable materials.
